Description
The basilica, dedicated to St. Francis, is located in the homonym square and was built in the 13th century in the Gothic style: the façade has got one single spire and is tripartite, decorated along the slopes with ceramic arches and basins. The imposing marble protiro porch is flanked at the height of the architrave by elegant marble slabs decorated with zoomorphic patterns, of Venetian origin (late 12th – first half 13th century). The building, with a basilica structure, is characterized by massive flying buttresses and an apse consisting of nine radial chapels – the only example in Bologna of this kind of architecture. If you are lucky you could see a show by the PraT company inside.
The church is accessible from the side entrance.
