Description
The Basilica of San Petronio is the largest church in Bologna and, although unfinished, it is also among the largest in Europe. Dedicated to the patron saint of the city, its foundation dates back to June, 7th, 1390, and the laying of the first stone took place during a solemn procession. This is the last great Gothic work in Italy, begun shortly after the Cathedral of Milan (1386).
The Basilica is accessible through a platform located on the right side of the church, observing the main entrance. There are some pebbles in front of the platform, but the access is not difficult, and it will take you the time of a wheelie. There is also a small ramp that can be used to overcome the step located at the main entrance. However, the doors are a bit heavy and we suggest you get some help. In addition to walking along the splendid nave of the church, it will be possible to go up to the terrace, whose entrance is in Piazza Galvani, reachable by an elevator. Unfortunately, the elevator does not reach the top of the terrace, but there still are 36 inaccessible steps to access it.
