Chiesa San Domenico
Details
Piazza S. Domenico, 13
Description
The Thirteenth-century basilica is located in the homonym square, not far from Piazza Maggiore. It is one of the most important places of worship in the city, seat of the Order of Preachers. Inside the Ark of Saint Dominic are the remains of the saint, founder of the order. It is worth a visit as it houses art works by important artists including Nicola Pisano, Niccolò dell’Arca, Michelangelo Buonarroti, Alfonso Lombardi and Jean-Baptiste Boudard.
From Piazza Maggiore, taking via D’’Azeglio, you will come out on via Farini. We recommend you cross the street to go to the opposite side of the arcade: by looking up you can admire ancient wall paintings. If you keep walking, there is a long ramp next to the arcade, that you can use to reach Piazza San Domenico. In Piazza de’ Calderini there are public toilets, but they are not accessible. Once you arrive in Piazza San Domenico, a paving of pebbles could slow down your pace: it is advisable to pass with the wheelchair on the smooth pavement in the shape of a square on the ground. In this way, you will easily arrive at the accessible entrance. The keeper will open the door for you and show you the way. Once inside, accessibility is total.
